Valuable Tip

Boxer: Several players (including myself) have switched the button layout to boxer. This slight variation from the standard button layout swaps the original melee (B) button with the original grenade throw (RT) button. This switch will allow you to keep your right thumb on the right stick to continue aiming while performing a melee attack.

Halo 3 - Tips

Here is a list of tips provided by gamers just like you. Would you like to contribute your own tips? Something you would like to share that has given you an edge? Click here to visit our Tip Contribution form.

Ranking up:

Take your time and rank up slowly. Matchmaking uses a combination of your skill / experience to determine who you will be facing in an online match. Ranking too quickly could make your opponents more difficult and in turn make the game less fun.

Weapon Identification:

Use the first moments of an encounter to identify which weapon your enemy is using. If you notice your enemy is wielding a close range weapons such as the shotgun, continue to attack while backing away. If you are able to stay out of range you will most likely win the encounter, and save yourself a mark in the death column.

Tactical Jumping:

On maps such as Guardian, tactical jumping can give you an edge over your competition. Players watch for enemies to approach from common directions, down hallways, around corners, et cetera. Jumping down to a lower level, or even across a gap not normally traversed could put you in a position that was unanticipated by your enemy.

Swords:

If you find your way into a swords match, or simply are wielding a sword while an opponent wields one as well, be aware that using the melee attack with the sword is faster than using the weapons main attack. The melee does not produce the lunge, but, if landed, will cause a one hit kill. Following up with a much faster melee attack after a sword clash will commonly give you the win.

Rockets:

When aiming with the rocket launcher, it is normally easier to aim at an opponents feet than attempting to hit him directly. A common tactic of defense is to continually jump, aiming where an enemy is expected to land and timing your shot to coincide with their landing will usually prove to be successful.

Twofer:

It is common during free for all matches, lone wolves for example, to come upon two enemies fighting each other. A quick grenade throw followed by some precise shooting could land you an easy double kill and give you a boost against your competition.

Radar:

You, as well as your enemies, are only visible on radar while moving quickly or running. In order to avoid showing up on radar, holding the crouch button, or changing your crouch setting to toggle and pressing it once, will keep you from moving too quickly. Also, by not pressing the left joystick fully in the direction you would like to go you can walk instead of run, keeping you hidden from enemy radar.

Weapon Advantages:

Remember to learn the advantages and disadvantages of every weapon e.g. when using the Battle Rifle 4 quick burst to the head is enough to kill an opponent. - Jamie0311

People under the stairs:

While on the map 'The Pit', if you consider the Sword room to be north, you can hide under the ramp just outside of the shotgun room in the south east corner of the map. Although this is only beneficial in certain games such as Infection, to get under the stairs continually walk towards the space under the ramp while repeatedly pressing and releasing the crouch button. Master this technique in forge before attempting in a real match.

Don't walk towards the light:

A small red/orange light on the front of a weapon is a dead give-away of a mauler. Try to stay back as this weapon can be devastating at close range. And remember, players can dual wield the mauler.. two lights can be more dangerous than one.

Boxer:

Several players (including myself) have switched the button layout to boxer. This slight variation from the standard button layout swaps the original melee (B) button with the original grenade throw (RT) button. This switch will allow you to keep your right thumb on the right stick to continue aiming while performing a melee attack.

Change isn't easy:

When changing button layouts or attempting to master a different weapon, don't give up prematurely. The new button layout may give you an edge once you get used to it, and the more experience you have with each and every weapon in the game the better. Wielding/using a weapon is one of the best ways to determine how to defend against it.

Forge:

The forge is a very valuable tool. If you've taken some time away from the game, don't just jump right back into it. Load a forge of last resort and use the plasma coils as target practice. Set the ammo to infinite and get used to the controls again.

Practice makes perfect:

Find a friend and load a forge match. Instead of going headlong for each other, establish rules of engagement. Such as only using grenades. You can also setup exercises where each of you strife around each other while attempting to keep your cross-hairs affixed to the other persons head.

Death by headshot:

Several weapons in Halo 3 will give a damage bonus if their shots land on an opponents head. While aiming for center mass is easier (larger target) headshots can be the difference in any encounter. Next time you're wielding the battle rifle, aim a bit higher and try to land some rounds to the head.

Easier Aim:

I started the game by using a particularly high sensitivity ~ 6 or 7. After much trial and tribulation, however, I found that using ~ 2 or 3 is much better for accuracy, particularly long-distance accuracy. Yes, it limits your response time in the event that someone hops up behind you -- but by utilizing the radar you should hopefully be able to avoid that. - Sprigot - Codeviking.net

Wall Rider:

On a lot of levels, such as Guardian, there are little places that you can quickly jump up on like by the invisibility you can jump up on the ledge right by the door or in lots of corners throughout the map. Try it in custom games first then you can use them online. It can help you a lot of times when you really need the kill. - Resort Cable

Close, Hammer > Sniper:

Sometimes in halo I get teamates who might be good but don't play smart. For instance, if you are in a close game on guardian and they have a sniper rifle and you have a shotgun, get into the blue room and see if the hammer is there. Now camp and make them come to you. If you know how to play, 9 times out of 10 the hammer/shotgun beats Battle Rifle or Sniper Rifle. - Resort Cable
